It’s not just any rental car, though. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original rent-a-racer, Ford launched the Mustang GT-H. And now it can be all yours.
Launched in 2016, and one of only 140 models, this Mustang is painted in the now legendary black and gold Hertz livery, just like its grand-pappy.
Sadly, this one isn’t based on the GT 350, like the original. Instead, Ford and Hertz agreed that the 435-horsepower of the Mustang GT was ample. To make it a little special, though, they did add a specially tuned exhaust, lowered the suspension, and fitted it with 19-inch wheels, wrapped in Michelin rubber.
The good news, though, is that the above modifications were completed with the input of Shelby American, so that, at least, is like the original.
Speaking, of the original, as we mentioned above, it launched in 1966. The cars actually left the factory as regular 2+2s but were at least equipped with a 271 hp 289 cid V8.
From there, Shelby plied his trade, working on the suspension, the brakes, and boosted power to 306 hp.
All of that could be had for the low, low price of $17/day or $70/week. Hertz came to its senses in 1967. Renters (reportedly) cut holes in the floors of these things to fit roll cages and maintenance costs caused them to shut the program down. Still, 1,000 GT350-Hs made it onto the street and are now sought after.
In 2006, you may recall, Ford celebrated the 40th anniversary of the program with a second generation of the Mustang GT-H, so the real news here is that someone will undoubtedly round out their collection and own the trio by the time this 2016 GT-H crosses the auction block in early April.
