Two very special Fords will be up for auction at Gooding & Company’s Amelia Island event this year. The very last Ford GT40 Mk. IV and a very original and 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra.

This Mark IV made it to Le Mans twice, but its tires never turned in anger on le Circuit de la Sarthe. This was brought to the 24-hour race as a bare tub. A spare chassis intended to be put into service if one of the other cars was damaged.

Seven years later, it ended up sold to a buyer who had two spare tubs and a pile of other extra parts. So he built two GT40 Mark IVs. It’s a 427 cubic-inch big block car with the right T44 transaxle that was found in a box in 1984. The project was completed in 1987.

This car has been given an FIA Historic Technical Passport, which means that it car run in FIA-sanctioned vintage racing. The new buyer could take this car to Le Mans and run it on that track for the very first time if they wanted to. And hopefully, they do.

The second is one of just 260 original 427 Cobras. The current owner bought the car in 1980. When his mechanic passed in 1991, the car was parked. And it has sat ever since. That’s 38 years with the same owner and 27 years in storage. With just 18,000 miles on the odometer, this car is a very special Cobra. It is expected to bring between $1 million and $1.3 million.

The Amelia Island auction takes place March 9th.
