The Ranger Raptor actually has quite a weight on its shoulders. Unlike AMG or M Performance, Raptor still means something.

So even though it’s not quite the F-150 Raptor, Ford still put a lot of work into making sure that the Ranger Raptor was up to snuff.

So thoroughly did they investigate to make sure that the Ranger Raptor was as good as it possibly could be, that Ford went to town on the transmission engineering.

We haven’t even gotten used to the idea of a 10-speed transmission yet, but Ford wanted to be sure that it wasn’t just going into the Ranger to be like its big brother.

“We actually did simulations during the exhaustive testing process for the optimum number of gear ratios for a rear-wheel drive truck of this size and power,” John Fallu, transmission and driveline engineering manager for Ford Asia Pacific, told CarAdvice. “We looked at seven speeds, nine speeds all the way up to 12 and 13 speeds, to see if – from a performance perspective and an efficiency perspective – what truly is optimal for the design.”

Ultimately, the team decided that the 10-speed was the best transmission for the job thanks to its combination of performance and refinement.

Ford was particularly concerned with how the truck would launch and whether or not it would be shift-busy, ultimately landing on the 10-speed as the gearbox for the job.
