Ford Releases Shelby GT500 Teaser
16 March 2018, 08:00

We now know what the front of the Shelby GT500 will look like. And it looks mean. With a big maw designed to eat air and Camaros, the new Mustang will assert its place in the muscle car wars.

Unfortunately, we don’t learn much with this teaser image, but we already know that the GT500 will make more than 700 hp, making it the most powerful Mustang ever.

That’s playing in Hellcat territory, and leaving the Camaro ZL1 with its 650 hp well behind.

Just how Ford is making that power remains to be seen, but a leaked image from a few months ago suggests it will come from a supercharged 5.2-liter engine. That engine would then likely be a modified version of the Voodoo V8 that powers the superlative GT 350.

This latest teaser also lends that leaked image credence, given that the cobra in both shots is exactly the same.

The teaser also came with the announcement that Ford is pushing to introduce connected and hybrid technology into 75% of its vehicles, including the Mustang.

While the GT500 is unlikely to require anything but horsepower, it will be the lower end of the spectrum that benefits from electrification.

“Mustang Hybrid,” writes Ford in a press release, “will be all about delivering V8-like performance with more low-end torque.”

It’s unclear whether this will displace EcoBoost technology or work with it, but other manufacturers, like Ford’s former ward Volvo, have made a habit of combining hybrid tech with turbochargers, so the two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive.
