Following the loss of many exhibitors, the North American International Auto Show’s (NAIAS) organizers have moved the show’s date from January to June 8 for 2020.

The long expected move means that manufacturers can take advantage of the warm weather to host events outside of the COBO Center, NAIAS’s longtime venue. 

“Detroit now has the opportunity to showcase our riverfront and our revitalized downtown during our beautiful summer months and creatively use the exterior of Cobo to launch new products that will transform Detroit into an exciting auto-centric environment,” said Larry Alexander, president and CEO of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The rescheduled show will also take it out of competition with the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. With automakers hungry to show off their gadgets, that non-auto show has been poaching many premium manufacturers, like BMW and Mercedes.

Organizers also hope that the new date will allow automakers and fans to benefit form a month of automotive excitement.

“The potential to create a month long automotive festival in Detroit starting with the Detroit Grand Prix, going through our show and concluding with the nationally-celebrated fireworks on the river, will provide an unmatched festival-like experience for all attendees,” said Rod Alberts, executive director of NAIAS.

Despite this announcement, anyone nostalgic for the winter auto show will get one more chance to go to NAIAS in January. With 2019’s show already organized, it will be the last winter NAIAS for the foreseeable future.
