Sorry Ranger fans. If you were hoping that the upcoming Ranger Raptor would arrive with a big gas powerplant, or six cylinders at all, you might be out of luck.
Trever Worthington, VP of product development for Asia Pacific told Car Advice Australia that there’s no market for that kind of engine in that truck. “Well, we haven’t looked at that one [referring to a gas or diesel V6] because as I’ve said this morning, the vast majority of the 200 markets that we sell Ranger, and when I say a vast majority I mean 99 per cent are all diesel markets,” he said.
“It’d be like turning up with something that people wouldn’t even consider buying,” Worthington added. Ouch. That’s a pretty strong statement.
Ford still hasn’t confirmed that the U.S. will even get the Ranger Raptor, so engineering in a gas V6, like the 2.7L EcoBoost is likely a non-starter. The Ranger Raptor offers up a 2.0L four-cylinder turbodiesel that makes 211 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Enough for most markets, even with a leisurely 10-second 0-60 time, but maybe not for the power-hungry U.S. truck buyer.
What about Ford’s V6 diesels? “I think the only V6 diesel that we have is a 3.0-litre V6 and I’m pretty sure it wouldn’t fit even if we tried to make it fit,” said Worthington.
Of course, that doesn’t mean that we won’t see the four-pot diesel Ranger Raptor somewhere down the road. But if you’re looking for high horsepower off-road chops, you might need to look elsewhere.
