Ford has sold a lot of Mustangs. And we mean a lot. In fact, they’ve just hit a huge milestone. Ford is celebrating the 10 millionth Mustang made rolling off of the assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

The Mustang started impressively strong after launch in 1964. Nearly half a million units the first year, and a full million in under two years. Two million was hit just three years after that, in 1969. But while sales have tapered off a bit since then, the Mustang has become the best-selling sports car of the last 50 years. Ford says that it’s not just the best selling sports car, but that it also has more Facebook followers than any other car.

The 10 millionth car is a V8 convertible, with a six-speed manual. Just like the very first production car. Sort of. They’re both Wimbledon White, they both have V8s and manual transmissions, and they both have open tops. But the similarities between old and new run out just about there.

To celebrate, Ford is throwing a party at Dearborn and at the Flat Rock plant. They’ve rounded up 60 Mustangs, from every production year, and have used them to spell out 10 million. Then three WWII-era P-51 Mustangs did a flyover of the display.

Ford exec Jim Farley sums up how the company feels about the Mustang. “Mustang is the heart and soul of this company and a favorite around the world. I get the same thrill seeing a Mustang roll down a street in Detroit, London or Beijing that I felt when I bought my first car – a 1966 Mustang coupe that I drove across the country as a teenager. Mustang is a smile-maker in any language.”
