What do you buy if you really need to be 1,320 feet away in less than nine seconds? Well, Ford suggests you take a look at the brand new 2018 Mustang Cobra Jet, “the hottest, fastest, most powerful, drag racing Mustang ever.”
A turnkey race car, this new model—limited to just 68 examples—will not be road legal, but will be ready to go to the races from the factory.
Billed as the “quickest Mustang Cobra Jet from the factory ever,” it’s capable of hitting 150 mph and running the quarter mile in the mid eights.
“From the very first Mustang Cobra Jets dominating the 1968 NHRA Winternationals to our modern-day racers, the Ford Performance Parts team continues to build on Cobra Jet’s success at the track over five decades,” said Eric Cin, global director, Ford Performance Parts. “This has inspired generations of Mustang fans to create their own performance machines for the street.”
The engine is a 5.2-liter version of the Coyote V8, with a 3.0-liter Whipple supercharger bolted on top. The engine sends its power to a Ford 9-inch solid rear axle with two-way coilovers that are adjustable. Low-drag disc brakes (from Strange Engineering) with a four-link rear-suspension and pan hard bars all keep you running through the quarter as fast as possible.
The Cobra Jet is only available in Race Red or Oxford White, but you can opt for a special graphics package with vintage lettering and a cobra (but no jet) on it.
If you’re lucky enough to own one of the ’68, the ’08, or the ’16 Cobra Jets, you’re invited to go to Summit Motorsport Park in Norwalk, Ohio for the 50th Anniversary Ford Performance Cobra Jet Reunion next weekend. It’s set to be the biggest Cobra Jet gathering ever, so don’t miss it.
Prices start at $130,000, but order fast to make you sure you get one of the 68, a number chosen to pay tribute to the first Cobra Jet, that came out in 1968.
