Report: Ford Contemplates “Ultra High-Performance” Edge RS
23 October 2018, 08:00

Ford won’t be satisfied with the medium high-performance Edge ST and is currently thinking about ultra high-performance SUVs, according to a report from Motor Trend.

The publication quotes Ford’s Chief Functional Engineer, Ed Krenz, who, while evasive, did talk freely about what an Edge RS would look like.

“[An Edge RS] would clearly be a bit of a white space vehicle, so it’s not something we’d go and say, ‘Let’s go copy X, Y, or Z. ‘” he told Motor Trend. “We’d be able to create kind of that segment of non-premium, ultra-high-performance SUVs.”

Krenz added that an RS would need to have more power as well as aggressive tires, an aggressive suspension setup, active dampers, and torque vectoring. “Those are things we definitely know how to do if we decide that we want to do it,” he said.

Motor Trend supposes that Ford’s 375 hp 3.5-liter twin turbo V6 would be a likely suspect for propulsion and that an updated version of the Focus RS’s all-wheel-drive system would sit under it all. Whatever powers it, it would have to be hotter than the Edge ST’s 335hp 2.7-liter V6.

Krenz also made some cryptic comments about transmissions in his conversation with Motor Trend, saying that while Ford refused to give up on the Mustang’s manual, “I think we’re going to learn a little bit, whether or not this segment really requires that.”
