How did a proposed mid-engined Viper project that stayed a secret and went nowhere become the 2006 Ford GT? Hagerty explains.
If you want the full story, you’ll have to click the link. But we’ll give you the summary here.
In the mid ’90s, Chrysler wanted a halo. They got it with the Viper. But engineers at the company wanted more. They wanted to go after the refinement of the Corvette, not just enjoy the brute force of the Viper. So they did a feasibility study, as one does. Higher ups weren’t interested, so it didn’t go anywhere.
Chris Theodore, the manager in charge of that mid-engine study, left Chrysler for Ford not long after. And he still had that mid-engine big. Ford had a history with mid-engine supercars already in the GT40. He pitched the idea of a mid-engine car to then-CEO of Ford Jac Nasser. Who, as you can probably guess, liked the idea. Enough to build it. It’s the story of how one person, with luck, timing, and perseverance, can get their dream car built.
