Ford Chip Ganassi Racing will run retro throwback liveries on its No. 66 and No. 67 Ford GT GTLMs at the Rolex 24 at Daytona later this month.
The retro-look liveries, which will appear on the cars at the Rolex 24 only, have somehow managed to make the achingly cool Ford GT GTLM even more appealing.
On the No. 66 livery are the colors of the Roush Racing Motorcraft Ford Mustang that took John Jones, Wally Dallenbach Jr. and Doc Bundy to a GTO class victory at Daytona back in 1985.
On the No. 67 sister car, meanwhile, are the iconic green, white and red Castrol colors that have adorned numerous race cars over the years.
The two Ford GTs appeared at the Roar Before the 24 pre-season test in minimalist white liveries – a sign that Ford had something special planned for this year’s edition of the American endurance classic.
“It’s always cool to have something new after running the same colors for three years,” said driver of the No. 66 Ford GT, Joey Hand. “I love the red, white and blue, but it’s always cool to have something new. Just having the cars in all white at the test, they looked great.”
The Ford GT, with its extremely slippery body and good efficiency, is typically very strong at Daytona. The Blue Oval has won the GTLM class at the Rolex 24 two years and the Chip Ganassi crew will be looking to make it three in a row when the green flag flies at Daytona later this month.
Ford will face stiff competition in the GTLM class, with Porsche, BMW and Corvette all looking strong at the pre-season test.
