Project cars don’t always start where you’d expect. This 1964 Marauder, for example, started as an engine that isn’t even the car before spinning out into this NASCAR-inspired finished product.

The engine came out of a boat and sat for eight years before owner Steven Dauria found this Marauder on eBay. The apparently had raced in NASCAR and through friends and acquaintances, he got it looking as good as it does now.

But he could never get the engine to stay cool. No matter what he did it would overheat. So he got an aluminum FE 502 cu. in. crate engine and slipped it in instead. 

Much to his chagrin, though, the engine still overheated. Finally, his neighbour came over with a magazine article about pulley speeds and he realized that the whole time the water pump had just been spinning too slowly.

Regardless, he ended up pulling a bunch of weight off the front of the car and giving 602 hp and 672 lb-ft of torque, so it wasn’t the worst decision in the world.
