A Better Look At The Slightly Awkward Supercars Ford Mustang
06 February 2019, 08:00

We’ve already seen a camouflaged example of the Ford Mustang for the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship, but now Ford Performance has released images and video of the car done up in an unofficial race livery.

The Ford Mustang is replacing the discontinued Ford Falcon in Supercars competition and will make its first competition appearance at the upcoming Superloop Adelaide 500. Ford says six Mustangs from three teams will be entered in the 2019 season – two for Shell VPower Racing, three for Tickford Racing and one for 23Red Racing.

“This is a historic moment,” said Ford Australia and New Zealand CEO Kay Hart. “To see the project come together has been incredibly exciting for everyone involved, and today marks the start of Mustang’s 2019 season. Mustang belongs on the track and everyone at Ford and our fans have been waiting for this moment.”

The new Supercars Mustang should help Ford take the fight to Holden and the leftover Nissan teams, with Ford using know-how from the Mustang GT4 and Ford GT racing programs in its development.

“We use the same processes to develop the Supercar that we do the NASCAR Mustang, that we do the Mustang GT4, that we do the NHRA Funny Car Mustang,” said  Ford Performance Motorsports Supervisor Brian Novak. “That development has been proven out through other programs – the Ford GT at Le Mans for example – and we then transfer that back, that knowledge, back to the road car.”

Have a listen to the Mustang’s V8 soundtrack in the video below ahead of its competition appearance at the Superloop Adelaide 500, which will be held between February 28 and March 1.
