A Mustang With Ford’s New 7.3L V8 Would be Terrible
13 February 2019, 08:00

This week, a report emerged alleging that Ford may stuff its new 7.3-liter heavy duty V8 truck engine into the front of the Mustang.

Motor Authority recently quizzed Ford product communications manager Mike Levine on the topic, who told them that the pushrod V8 would technically fit in the front of the Mustang. This led to speculation that a Mustang with the big 7.3-liter engine is on the way – but it’s not, because this would be terrible.

You are probably already in the process of writing a comment about how this new engine could have a boatload of power and torque on tap and is therefore perfect for the Mustang, but we’re going to have stop you right there. Sure, this 7.3-liter engine may be extremely powerful, but so is Ford’s 5.0-liter Coyote V8.

More importantly, the 5.0-liter V8 doesn’t weigh as much as one of the Titanic’s smoke stacks. We may not know exactly how much the new 7.3-liter V8 weighs, but with an iron block and robust internals designed for durability, it will not be a light engine by any means. Weight will ruin any good sports car, especially if it’s stuffed in the front end. And with America’s pony car’s placing more of an emphasis on handling with each passing year, it seems highly, highly unlikely that this engine will appear in a production Mustang.

That doesn’t mean that some mad person won’t stuff this new 7.3-liter engine into the front of a custom Mustang build, but even then, it’s not hard to think up a better engine swap for a performance car than a torquey, heavy duty truck engine with an iron block.

There’s also speculation that the 7.3-liter V8 could find its way into the Ford F-150 Raptor, but we wouldn’t be too stoked on that, either. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 – it’s a more unique and performance-focused engine than the low-cost, mass produced workhorse that the 7.3-liter V8 will be.
