The Ford Mustang GT4 is a fairly popular choice among teams competing in North American GT4 class racing, but it has only had a very limited presence in race series outside of the United States and Canada.

European race fans, along with V8-loving Aussies, may soon have more opportunities to see and hear the banzai Mustang GT4 race. Speaking to Sportscar365, Ford Performance’s director of motorsports, Mark Rushbrook, revealed the automaker will have an increased presence in GT4 racing in Europe and Australia thanks to new entries in British GT and the Australian GT Championship, among others.

“We started the program with the thought that we wanted it to be global,” Rushbrook told the racing publication.“That’s the advantage with the SRO and the global homologation. That’s definitely part of the strategy and getting more cars there.”

Canadian team Multimatic will field two Mustang GT4s in British GT in 2019, with Ford drivers Scott Maxwell and Billy Johnson set to take on driving duties alongside up and coming racer Sebastian Priaulx. British team Race Performance will also field a one-car Mustang GT4 effort with Aron Taylor-Smith and Sam Smelt at the wheel. It’s not yet clear which team will field the Ford in Australian GT.

Additionally, Rushbrook revealed that Ford may eventually introduce an ‘Evo’ kit for the Mustang GT4 with the goal of improving the car’s performance and drivability. The impending arrival of this ‘Evo’ kit could be a sign a Ford is working on an updated version of the Mustang GT350, which the Mustang GT4 is based on.

“We’re looking within what you’re allowed to do for GT4 in terms of Evos,” Rushbrook told Sportscar365.

“When is the right time to do it and what do we want to do with it? Whether we make some powertrain changes or body changes.”

“We haven’t made any decisions on when or what that will be yet or what it will be, but that’s part of the planning.”
