RWD Ford Explorer Platform to Spawn a Series of Mustang Crossovers: Report
07 March 2019, 08:00

A new report in the April 2019 issue of Motor Trend indicates that an entire lineup of Mustang-badged coupe crossovers is in the automaker’s product pipeline.

The report, which does not name any sources and appears to be written under a pseudonym, indicates the new lineup of Mustang crossovers will be based on the CD6 rear-wheel-drive architecture that currently underpins the 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator.

In addition to “Mustang inspired four-door coupe styling,” the crossovers will also allegedly include “engine and power variants equal to all but the most extreme Shelby models.”

Unless our reading comprehension is off, it sounds like a rear-wheel drive Mustang-branded coupe crossover with a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 could be on the way. We imagine less extreme versions would utilize the Mustang’s 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.

The same report indicates that the CD6 platform was also going to spawn a high-dollar Lincoln luxury sedan before brand boss Joy Falotico smartened up and killed the project off. The Continental’s extremely poor marketplace performance is all the evidence Lincoln should need that such a product just won’t sell in this day and age.
