We probably don’t need to give readers of this site a backstory on the legendary Ford RS200, but just in case, we’ll give a you a brief backgrounder.

The RS200 was developed by Ford’s British racing division Ford Motorsport to take on all the other mad machines that were competing in the FIA’s Group B rally class in the mid-1980s. Group B’s rules stipulated that cars used in the series must have a production run of 200 cars, so Ford was forced to sell their new race-bred mid-engine rally machine to the public. Ford never actually met the production requirements, building just 146 examples of the car between 1984 and 1986.

Those 146 road cars (or what’s left of them) are obviously extremely valuable today, but we were shocked to see just how expensive they’ve become as of late. A nice black Ford RS200 recently sold for a staggering $280,000 on US car auction Bring-A-Trailer, attracting 26 bids in the process. This extremely well-kept RS200 has just 1,135 miles on the odometer and was ordered from the factory with desirable options like the Recaro seats and power windows.

Like all RS200s, powering the car is a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a five-speed manual transmission and a sophisticated all-wheel drive system with three differentials. This car also has the optional factory-installed power kit, bringing output from around 250 hp closer to 350 hp.

We suppose a car is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it, but how high will RS200 values go? Is $300,000 the peak, or could the RS200 join the Shelby Cobra and GT40 in becoming a seven-figure Ford?
