The previous Mustang GT500 had a 650 hp 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine and would top out at around 190 mph. The new 2020 Mustang GT500 has a 700+ hp 5.2-liter supercharged engine, so theoretically, it should be able to go faster than its predecessor.

Unfortunately, level heads prevailed within Ford and the automaker has decided to slap a top speed limited on its latest high horsepower pony car. That means the 2020 Mustang GT500 will stop accelerating once it hits 180 mph – making it slower than a Bentley SUV. Cool.

While the top speed has been purposely nerfed, acceleration is still ample. Ford claims the new GT500 will hustle from 0-60 mph in under three seconds and do a sub 11-second quarter-mile.

There will also be an available Track Package for the new GT500, which will add exposed carbon fiber aerodynamic bits, including a front splitter inspired by the Mustang GT4 race car, along with lightweight carbon fiber wheels. Track Pack models will be faster around a circuit, while the base model’s slippery aerodynamics make it better suited for drag racing and straight line speed.
