Ford Facing Justice Department Emissions Investigation
27 April 2019, 08:00

Ford is facing an investigation from the U.S. Justice Department. There is a criminal investigation ongoing into the automaker’s emissions certification process, the company revealed in its latest Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

“As previously reported, the Company has become aware of a potential concern involving its U.S. emissions certification process. This matter currently focuses on issues relating to road load estimations, including analytical modeling and coastdown testing. The potential concern does not involve the use of defeat devices. We voluntarily disclosed this matter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board on February 18, 2019 and February 21, 2019, respectively. Subsequently, the U.S. Department of Justice opened a criminal investigation into the matter. In addition, we have notified a number of other state and federal agencies. We are fully cooperating with all government agencies,” the filing read

Back in February, Ford said that it had concerns with its own emissions testing process. Workers had raised concerns last fall, and the company had hired an outside firm to help investigate the issue. Ford subsequently reported the issue to investigators.

The flaw was in the company’s approach to simulating aerodynamic drag and tire friction when using outside testing labs. Ford had said at the time that it was not yet sure if there would be an issue with the emissions certifications or with the fuel economy labels on vehicles.

The investigation is ongoing.
