Report: Big-Power V8 Raptor Coming
11 June 2019, 08:00

If Ford was worried about the Ram Rebel TRX concept coming to production and stealing the Raptor’s lunch, then they’ve found the best way to tear apart the threat. Fighting power with power by launching a ferocious reply a super-Raptor. At least that’s if a new report is right.

The current Ford F-150 Raptor’s 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 is no slouch as-is, what with 450 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque, but rumour has it that the 700+ hp Hellcat V8 will go into the Ram Rebel TRX. A new report says that Ford will be bringing a V8 of its own to the party.

Ford Authority cites sources familiar with Ford product plans with the news. That the automaker is testing out a V8-powered Raptor to bring more power and a bit more of that V8 rumble. Sorry, EcoBoost, but that’s one place it’s nearly impossible to compete.

Which eight is the question, though. There are a couple of options on the table in the Ford V8 family. While the standard 5.0L Coyote doesn’t really add anything other than audio to the Raptor, two of the company’s other engines could.

For a start, there’s the supercharged 5.2L Voodoo V8 that’ll be in the Mustang Shelby GT500. That’s expected to make 700+ hp, though a flat-plane crank in a truck is an interesting proposition. There’s also the new Super Duty-bound 7.3L gas V8 with as-yet unreleased power figures.

So what V8 could end up in the Raptor? We’re not sure. We just know that the end result will be far from dull.
