Ford’s giving performance shoppers another option. 

The new Mustang GT Performance Pack Level 2 is a bridge between the GT and the GT350, bringing a lower ride height, a new front splitter and rear spoiler, MagneRide suspension, new 19-inch wheels, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

Ford says most of the development work that went into the new package actually happened after-hours, with heavy hitters from across the company’s engineering department coming together for the project.

The Level 2 pack simply builds on the goodies Ford included in Performance Pack Level 1– different chassis tuning, antilock brake calibration, unique stability control and electric power-assisted steering, six-piston Brembos with larger rotors, a k-brace, larger radiator, strut tower brace, and a 3.73 TORSEN rear end.

The tires are actually 1.5 inches wider, 305/30/R19 Michelin rubber is wrapped around new 19-inch aluminum wheels, 10.5 inches wide in the front and 11 out back. The car also sites half-an-inch closer to the ground.

The MagneRide dampers get new tuning and are paired with 20 percent stiffer front springs and 13 percent stiffer rears compared to Level 1. The steering gets a new quicker calibration for better response, plus a 67 percent stiffer rear stabilizer bar, while the front is 12 percent more rigid.

“It will just beg you to go faster,” said Jamie Cullen, Ford supervisor for vehicle dynamics development. “The car has lightning-quick response and never gives up grip.”

Along with its new suspension, the aerodynamics are also a big part of upping the cars cornering prowess, with the team benchmarking the Level 2’s aerodynamics against the 2013 Boss 302 Laguna Seca. Ford says the new 3-inch front splitter creates about 24 pounds of downforce at 80 mph, with the car’s balance then smoothed out by a redesigned rear spoiler.

The Level 2’s visual clues are minimal, there’s no special badging, just the 10-spoke Dark Tarnish wheels the black aerowork. Shoppers will be offered a choice of Recaro buckets in either leather or cloth and manual transmissions only. The package is available to order now and will set you back $6,500, cars are expected to reach North American showrooms this spring.
