Ford has been on a trademarking spree lately. Now, All Ford Mustangs has discovered two new trademarks submitted by Ford for the names “Bronco Big Bend” and “Bronco Outer Banks.”

These names follow three more similarly evocative trademarks first uncovered by Ford Authority. While those names (Wildtrack, Badlands, and Adrenaline) were assumed to be for the Ranger, the presence of the name Bronco in the trademarks make it difficult to interpret them as being applied to anything other than Ford’s upcoming off-roader.

Furthermore, the trademark applications note that the names are for “land motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, pick-up trucks, sport utility vehicles.”

The names are both references to popular vacation destinations.

Big Bend refers to Big Bend National Park in west Texas. The park stretches along the Rio Grande, bordering with Mexico. Although not as famed as Moab, the park does boast several off-roading trails.

Outer Banks, meanwhile, is the name of the string of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina and Virginia. Famous for its long beaches and treacherous seas, the outer banks feature picturesque vistas as well as numerous ship wrecks and the famously ill-fated Roanoke Colony. Corolla, North Carolina, meanwhile, is home to a herd of feral Banker horses sometimes referred to as Spanish mustangs.

Both names summon visions of beautiful rugged Americana, making them ideal for use on SUVs. It’s not hard to imagine, either, how an off-roading location and a string of beaches could be used to market SUVs.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait until 2020 at least to find out exactly what Ford has in mind for these names, if anything.
