Ford has finally given us the important figures for its new 7.3-liter pushrod V8 engine, set to go under the hood of the F-250 and up. Available in two tunes, the engine will make 430 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque in the F-250, making it the most powerful gas engine in its class.

While the new, 2019 Silverado 2500 makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque from its 6.6-liter V8, the Ram 2500’s 6.4-liter Hemi makes 410 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque.

Under the hood of the F-550 and up, meanwhile, the engine will be tuned to make a more modest 350 hp and 468 lb-ft of torque. Either way, the engine will be paired to Ford’s 10-speed transmission, which is roughly the same size and weight as the outgoing six-speed.

That transmission should help quell this massive engine’s thirst, but no fuel economy numbers have yet been released. Ford does say that a third tune will be available E-Series vehicles, which will be designed to optimize fuel economy.

For those focused on torque, Ford’s heavy duty trucks will also be available with a 6.7-liter diesel, unfortunately figures for that engine will only be announced later this year, says Ford.

“The 7.3-liter is designed for maximum durability in the harshest environments given that our customers live and work in these conditions every day,” said Joel Beltramo, Ford manager for gas V8 engines. “This engine has the largest displacement in its class and is designed to provide benefits in key areas like power, durability, ease of maintenance and total operating costs.”
