Ford Announces Astounding 0-100-0 Time for Shelby GT500
07 August 2019, 08:00

The Shelby GT 500 will get you from 0 to 100 mph and then back down to 0 again in just 10.6 seconds, according to Ford.

Naturally, you’d expect a modern car that makes 760 hp, has a 7-speed dual-clutch, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires to be ludicrously fast. But, according to these numbers, the GT500 is faster than the Bugatti Veyron.

Ford attributes much of the this performance to the transmission, which can deliver the GT500’s 625 lb-ft of torque to the back wheels while changing gears in the blink of an eye. The engineers have been careful not to design an unusable car, though.

“Contrary to popular belief, fast shifts do not always equate to better road performance,” said Morgan. “In every driving situation, we emulated what professional drivers do, whether it’s a smooth, precise heel-and-toe shift of a professional track driver or a much more forceful powershift like drag racers. We’ve designed the perfect shift every time.”

From there, the power goes down the line via a carbon fiber driveshaft to a 3.73:1 Torsen limited slip differential. As a result of all that power, though, Ford has had to focus on strength as well as light weight. That means that it beefed up the half-shafts and redesigned the rear suspension hub to make sure nothing bends under the pressure of all that torque.

The final ingredient in the 10.6 second recipe is the brakes. With 16.5-inch rotors up front, the GT500 has the biggest front brakes on any domestic sports coupe, according to Ford. All that and some super lightweight carbon fiber wheels shod in Michelin’s stickiest tires means that the GT500 is about as serious as they come.
