Shelby American has waved its wand over Ford’s best-known pair of vehicles to pump them up to insane levels at SEMA.
The concepts aren’t production vehicles yet, but Shelby is gauging audience feedback to see if it should build the GT500 Dragon Snake and the Super Snake Sport F-150.
“These two post-title concepts are an exploration of new capabilities, new technologies and potential new models,” says Gary Patterson, president of Shelby American. “We optimized each vehicle for a specific task by leveraging new, innovative ideas. Now we’re seeking feedback from enthusiasts about the pair, including their thoughts on potential production.”
The GT500 Dragon Snake owes its name to the Shelby Cobra Dragonsnake of the ‘60s—a drag racing version of the Cobra that Shelby built in the ‘60s.
The modern GT500 Dragon Snake, meanwhile, pumps the GT500 up to more than 800 hp (Shelby won’t say exactly how much more, though.
Shelby has also revised the suspension for maximum grip under acceleration and removed weight to give those 800 horses the best possible chance. The company has also retuned the dual-clutch transmission, widened the body, and added a high-flow catalytic converter to make the Dragon Snake live up to its name.
“The 2020 Shelby GT500 is truly amazing in stock configuration, but we wanted to explore its pure acceleration capabilities,” said Vince LaViolette, Shelby American Vice President of Operations and Chief of R&D. “So we worked closely with Ford Performance and other partners to create the ultimate ‘weapon of track destruction’ in the quarter mile.”
The Super Snake F-150, meanwhile, starts as a two-door F-150 and gets a 755 hp supercharged V8, new wheels, and an upgraded braking system. It also gets revised aero and an improved interior.
“Our goal was to build the unrivaled ‘king of the road’ F-150 and a nightmare for any other truck,” said LaViolette. “And it is. We found the Shelby Super Snake Sport F-150 concept astonishingly fast during our testing. This concept certainly lives up to our initial vision for the truck.”
