If there was ever any doubt regarding how committed Ford is to giving its new full-electric crossover the full “Mustang” treatment, wait until you hear this: Ford has confirmed that a Shelby-badged variant of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E is coming, and it will be engineered with race track driving in mind.

Ford Performance Chief Program Engineer Ed Krenz confirmed the vehicle to UK-based outlet evo, saying he is “looking forward to the challenge of applying the Shelby characteristics to an electric car. The trick for us is the fun-to-drive part, and sustainability in terms of charging.

“It needs to be capable to go all day on a trackday – you can’t do 20 minutes and then have to charge it all night.”

The future Shelby Mustang Mach-E will sit above the Mach-E GT in the lineup, besting that vehicle’s targeted sub-4-second 0-to-60 acceleration time. We imagine that, like the GT, the Shelby variant of the Ford Mustang Mach-E will employ all-wheel drive; other, lesser trim levels come standard with a rear-wheel-drive configuration.

Ensuring that the Shelby Mustang Mach-E will be able to handle a day of fun at a road course will certainly pose a challenge. Ford is targeting a driving range of 250 miles on a full battery charge for the Mach-E GT, but that assumes relatively easy take-off and acceleration, with plenty of cruising at normal, street-legal speeds. Road course driving, with its constant hard acceleration and hard braking, consumes much more energy.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E will go on sale toward the end of 2020, although evo expects we’ll have to wait until at least 2021 before a Shelby variant launches, probably with a price tag around £65,000 – about $84,000 U.S.
