Although the identity of the Bullitt Mustang’s buyer at the recent Mecum Auction in Kissimmee is still unknown, the former owner has revealed that, in accordance with Steve McQueen’s wishes, it will not be restored.

The Bullitt Mustang is the “hero” car from the movie Bullitt and was purchased for a record-setting $3.4 million dollars a few weeks ago.

The revelation was made in an Instagram post run by the car’s former owner, Sean Kiernan.

“The car is doing fine and will not be restored,” wrote Kiernan. “Like that was even a thing?”

As hinted at above, this would suit Steve McQueen. In 1977, after McQueen discovered that Kiernan’s father had bought the car, McQueen tried to buy it back. He wrote:

“I would like to appeal to you to get back my ’68 Mustang. I would like very much to keep it in the family in its original condition as it was used in the film, rather than have it restored; which is simply personal with me.”

Along with the promise that the car would remain in its original condition, Kiernan wrote that the new owner’s identity would eventually become known. Until then, we’ll just have to speculate wildly.
