A long time ago, an instructor said I had an "awkward" way to handle the steering wheel. I tend to drive with my hands at 11 and 4/5. It came natural. Just feels alot more comfortable for me, as far push/pull techniques. (Ever ride teapots at the fair? Maybe for you it was something different, same concept - had metal "wheel" in the middle where you pull/rotate to spin one way, push/rotate to spin the other??) I believe that is where such grip originated.
