When you build close to six million vehicles every year, plus untold prototypes and concepts, and you’ve been in business for more than 115 years, it turns out that some things can get lost behind the couch on occasion. In this case, the history of an entire car. A mid-engined Mustang prototype that Ford has photos of, but doesn’t know a whole lot more about. So they want your help!

“Gentlemen: As you know, I am a big Ford Motor Company fan, but not really a motor-head. I was going through some scans and these jumped out at me — Did we know that in ’66 Ford was working on a 2-seater, mid-engine Mustang? It might have been re-skinned as the Mach 2 Concept, but at this point it was definitely a Mustang . . . Maybe this is well-known among the cognoscenti, I just didn’t know about it. Did either of you?” That’s the letter that head of Ford Archives Dean Webber sent five years ago, accompanied by these photos, to a number of other knowledgable Mustang people.

An odd one, because as the head of Ford’s archives, and keeper of the sacred documents, Weber was normally on the receiving end of letters like this. Followed by a trip into the stacks to find an answer.

The car was from 1966, they think, but nobody could remember a mid-engine 1966 Mustang program, not even Hal Sperlich, who was the product planner in charge of the original Mustang. The photos of this very cool car were clearly taken inside of one of Ford’s studios, but it remained a mystery. And no, it wasn’t part of the 1967 mid-engine Mach 2 experiment.

So Ford Performance is reaching out, looking to find out if anyone can shed some light on this series of four photos from the Ford Archives collection. If you can help, click on the link for contact information and if you can unlock the mystery Ford will give you credit and send you a special prize.
