Ford unveiled a prototype Mustang today destined for the drag strip. The Cobra Jet 1400 will make (appropriately) 1,400 hp, 1,100 lb-ft of torque, hit a top speed of 170 mph, and is projected to hit low-eight-second times in the quarter-mile. And all without using any gas.

The all-electric Mustang is a testbed for Ford and competes spiritually with the Chevrolet eCOPO Camaro, another all-electric, drag-focused pony car, albeit one that still runs in the nines.

“This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, but a challenge we loved jumping into,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now. This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports.”

Ford plans to run the car on the drag strip later this year, though, understandably, it can’t say exactly when that will be right now. Still, if you’re eager for a look, it will be featured on Motor Trend’s “Hard Cell,” a web series that focuses on EVs, on April 26.

The Cobra Jet 1400 has been designed alongside MLe Racecars, Watson Engineering, AEM EV, and Cascade, who built and tuned the vehicle; built the roll cage and supported chassis development; calibrated the software and motor controls; and supplied the motor and inverter, respectively.
