Legendary Mustang Cobra Jet Drag Car Comes Up For Auction
25 November 2017, 08:00

This 1969 Mustang Cobra Jet was one of the West Coast’s most iconic drag racers.

Former Ford Racing director turned dealership owner, Chuck Foulger, was known as one of the most performance-savvy men on the West coast. His Monrovia, California dealership was well known for its intimate knowledge of the Ford Racing catalog, along with its ability to win on Sunday and sell on Monday.

From the factory, this R-code Cobra Jet was equipped with the monstrous 335 hp, 428 cubic-inch CJ Ram Air V8 engine, a close-ratio 4-speed T-10 transmission, the competition suspension package, power front disc brakes, and AM radio.

After arriving at Foulger Ford the car was quickly converted to automatic for better launches, given Lakewood traction bars, Hurst drag shocks, Cragar SS wheels wrapped in racing rubber, along with a set of radical 180-degree exhaust headers. The car also received a distinct paint job that was blue on one side and white on the other, Foulger believed the ensuing media coverage of the car would make it look like there were more than one Foulger-Ford sponsored Cobra Jet.

The car is being sold without a reserve at Barrett Jackson’s Scottsdale 2018 auction, documentation includes Marti Deluxe Report, original Build Sheet, period racing photos and various drag racing magazines from the 1970s highlighting the Cobra Jet.
