World’s First Carbon-Fiber Bodied GT500CR is Ready to be Made
23 May 2020, 08:00

Classic Recreations, from Yukon, Oklahoma, is set to become the first company to make an officially licensed 1967 Shelby GT500CR Mustang’s body entirely out of carbon-fiber. This, says the company, will be followed by a Shelby-licensed all carbon Cobra at a later date.

The company has partnered with Wisconsin’s SpeedKore Performance Group for its intimate knowledge of carbon production to make this project happen.

“When we decided to build the carbon-fiber-bodied GT500CR Mustangs, we wanted to work with someone who shared our vision for the future of custom car building,” said Jason Engel, Founder and President of Classic Recreations. “Having a supplier that is equally committed to high-quality craftsmanship and producing innovative vehicles is incredibly important to us and we found that matched commitment in SpeedKore.”

Although the company has neglected to share any weight figures, the carbon-body will be based on a 3D digital model of an entire GT500CR body. Wisdom holds that carbon fibre tends to way as much as five times less than steel, so the weight savings would be significant.

“Since 1998, Mr. Shelby believed that carbon fiber would be the future of American sports car manufacturing,” said Neil Cummings, Co-CEO of Carroll Shelby International. “We believe the introduction of a carbon-fiber GT500 Mustang and Cobra is a natural next step in the evolution of these iconic vehicles and builds on the legacy of the same innovation that Carroll Shelby was known for.”

Under the carbon hood, meanwhile, a range of high-performance options are available. The car can be fitted with a 5.0-liter Coyote Gen 3 engine making anywhere from 490 hp to a 427 cubic-inch engine supercharged to make 900 hp, which should be peppy. All engines are eq uipped with a Tremec 5-speed manual.

No price has been announced for the carbon-body, but don’t expect it to be low.
