In a way, the subbrandification of Mustang has already begun. But Ford is now reportedly looking at ways to formalize the turning of Mustang and Bronco into sub brands.
At least, that’s what “sources” are telling Autoweek. The “Ford Icons group” will take the names and offer several models under each name plate. Kind of like the Mustang and the Mustang Mach-e or the Bronco and the Bronco Sport.
“We have to leverage what we’re good at,” the source told Autoweek. “What are we good at? Mustangs and trucks. Mustang is a niche product with a great legacy. We need to expand on that legacy. More Broncos is a no-brainer.”
Rumors suggest that the smaller Bronco Sport will be a unibody truck and could spawn a pick-up version. The rumors have suggested that Maverick could be the name, but why not add Bronco to the name somewhere?
Meanwhile, the source told Autoweek that Ford would be willing to slap a Mustang badge on just about anything.
“Who knows what the timeframe is in this COVID atmosphere we’re in but yeah, we’re looking at more EVs, hybrids, sedans, crossovers, coupe EVs, convertible EVs, rear-drive, all-wheel drive, you name it,” the source said. “There’s probably going to be a fistfight over a pickup called Mustang, though.”
The goal would be to turn the Bronco badge into an off-road badge and the Mustang badge would be a promise of more performance. Or so the source tells Autoweek. And while the notion of more believably off-road capable Broncos is certainly fun, and all of the spy pics we’ve seen so far have been promising, it is more than a little alarming to think that the name Mustang could soon stop meaning anything resembling a two-door RWD sports car.
