It’s not often you get to have a double-barrelled headline like that, but this 1965 resto-mod Mustang is as interesting for who commissioned it as it for who built it.
Built by Panoz Auto Development, it was commissioned by TV’s dreamiest doctor, Patrick Dempsey.
The project reportedly took two and a half years and 3,900 hours. It’s powered by a 4.6-liter V8 that send power through a T-56 6-speed manual, and interior and suspension parts from S197 and SN95 Mustangs.
Beyond the usual resto-mod stuff, Panoz reportedly designed new crumple zones and side protection to actually make this Mustang safe in a crash.
Unfortunately, if you buy this Mustang, you won’t necessarily get a chance to meet Dempsey. The car was bought by Equuus Automotive Inc, which modified the front and read lower valences and replaced the hood and rear side window glass.
The custom dash, metal pedal covers, air conditioning, power window and the like are all Panoz. The interior was reupholstered, a modified lower console, and a Becker Mexico radio with Bluetooth.
It’s only seen 8,500 miles since being built in 2008. Although the auction on Bring a Trailer ends in 6 days, the price is already up to $75,000. But good news! It has child-seat restraints in the back seat, so it’s a perfect family vehicle!
