Mustang Owners Sue Ford for Allegedly Faulty 6-Speed Manual
11 June 2020, 08:00

Ford is facing another lawsuit for its transmissions. This time, drivers of 2011-2020 Mustangs and Mustangs GT are suing Ford for over problems with the Getrag MT82 and MT82-D4 six-speed manual transmission.

The suit alleges that the transmission is inherently flawed, with defects that lead to slipping, jerking, and clashing gears. If this all sounds familiar to you, it’s because it’s been a widely reported issue.

Ford, though, blamed simple wear and tear and improper use. The company claims that the issues occur when temperatures are cold and the car hasn’t been allowed to warm up.

The lawsuit, however, argues that it is, instead, poor design that leads to these faults. It argues that Ford knew about the problem, issuing special service bulletins to dealerships instructing technicians to drain and refill the transmissions and replace a long list of parts, including the shift forks, synchronizer hubs and sleeves, clutch pedal position switches, and the gearshift lever.

In 2011, meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted an investigation into the gearbox following a number of complaints. It found no safety risks, but the problem brought up in the lawsuit appears to be in quality, not safety.
